Millie, Mollie and the Magic Castle
By Mandy Dodd
October 2009
This is another full stage theatre set written and performed by the What a Doddle Theatre Company in the Oakwood Theatre Woodley. However, this year we have followed in the tradition of the Christmas Pantomime although using puppets in the show exclusively.
Two years ago we decided to build and perform our delightful “Millie and Mollie’s Christmas Cracker” in the new theatre space in Woodley. This was so well received we repeated the performance the following year and sold out!
This year is very different as we felt we needed to top last years show. Following extensive research the play has been written as a Pantomime in miniature observing all the necessary elements and traditions.
Godfrey (our hapless knight) leads us through the story where we see the precious Gem of Happiness taken by the manic “Oogie Fleegie bird” it is then accidentally swept out to sea where we meet Mabel the Mermaid who takes us on an undersea adventure.
Back in the forest, Millie and Mollie help Godfrey to overcome the scary dragon and save the day and the gem is then restored to the castle.
During the play there is a magic castle with a working drawbridge, clouds that light up, and magical scene changes with many different types of puppetry presented from glove puppets to shadow puppets to UV and rod puppets. There is something for everyone to take away from this show.
Sadly, this may well have to be our last production of this type but we resolve to make “Millie and Mollie and the Magic Castle” a show to remember.
