Glass and shadows re-tell Shakespeare’s The Tempest in Dynamics 09

July 2009

Almost a year on from its premiere at the UK’s International Glass Festival, Theatre of Glass will be performing their original piece of visual theatre, Tempestade, as part of the closing stages of the Dynamics 09 International Puppet Festival.

Using crafted glass to cast amazing shadows on a cinematic scale Theatre of Glass, a collaboration between artists in Portugal and England, will create a cascade of images blended with live music by using mix of specially created glass instruments, traditional strings and new technologies.

To be performed at Hagley Catholic High School and The Edge Arts Centre, Tempestade is one of the final shows to be performed as part of Dynamics 09, the largest puppet festival in England that has presented 18 shows in more than 30 locations across the West Midlands featuring the best UK and international puppeteers from Hungary, Belgium and Germany.

Alongside the public festival, artists performing in the festival with the Dynamics 09 team have engaged with over 2000 young people and people with learning difficulties through workshops and through performances delivered in education settings, demonstrating their artistry and encouraging others to learn and create. As part of the extensive education programme pupils at Hagley Catholic High School, the venue for one of the Tempestade performances, have taken part in shadow theatre puppet making workshops with Dynamics 09 artistic director Clive Chandler, learning first hand the advanced techniques used by Theatre of Glass.

Sally Rew, Producer, and Clive Chandler, Artistic Director, Dynamics 09 said:

“We are pleased that one of the final performances, Tempestade, is taking place at, and has involved pupils from Hagley Catholic High School, which is also the base for PuppetLink which produces the Festival.

Dynamics 09 has enabled audiences across the region to experience the talent and skills of puppeteers from around the globe and has hopefully, through the education programme, introduced a new generation to the extraordinary art of the puppeteer.”

Dynamics 09 International Puppet Festival is produced by PuppetLink and is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and Awards for All and by Worcestershire County Council.
