‘Windy Old Weather’ reviewed by Martina Glason

In its latest production the Nutmeg Puppet Company brings to life tales of a bygone era revolving around the power of the wind. The show is full of twists and turns, supported by tunes that are extremely catchy (which I still find myself humming!). It is fun-filled and educational, with puppetry providing a novel theatrical medium to convey an environmental message to mesmerise and enthral its young audience (and the not so young!). With an extremely versatile and vibrant set, the audience is taken on a voyage of discovery, captivated by various characters along the way.
The storyline centres on Michael and his adventures with Zephyr, a kind wind, who carries him on a journey back in time where he meets Jenny. Set in an era where livelihoods in Norfolk depended on wind power, Jenny helps her grandfather transport goods between Yarmouth and Norwich on a wherry – whose sail is powered by the wind. Jenny’s world is full of characters such as wicked witches, gentle giants and secretive smugglers, capturing the children’s imagination. The puppets and props are truly magical and created with attention to detail and all having their own distinct voices, giving them bags of character.
The audience experience the benefits of the wind, such as drying the washing, modern day wind turbines and wind pumps. Nature is also shown to be reliant on the power of the wind as dandelion seeds are carried in the air, butterflies are buffeted along and birds are helped on their way. Children are invited to take part in the show by being taught how to fly with Zephyr.
Local myths and legends are revealed along the river Yare in a fantasy world, where the puppets captivate their young audience in a fun yet educational manner. Learning about the power and influence of the wind without knowing it - education at its best.
